"Viagra is not a new idea," said study author Dr. Richard Evans, a professor of urology at the University of Manchester.

The study was led by Dr. Mark Dix of the University of Manchester.
Richard Evans, a urologist with the Royal College of Surgeons in London, said patients should always speak to their health care provider about any medication that may be causing symptoms.
"There is a real risk that you might have some side effects that could be caused by an over-the-counter medicine," Dr. Evans said.
The study was funded by a private, nonprofit research group that offers clinical trials for more than $3.4 billion a year in funding.

John Thompson, who runs a private practice in London, said the study is a "modest improvement" of his own experience with Viagra, but that people need to be aware of the potential risks associated with taking the drug.
"I would say that taking Viagra at night and using it at night is just as safe as taking it on the night before," Dr. Thompson said.
